Serious concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of intelligence institutions and national security mechanisms because insecurity in Nigeria continues to increase. The country has experienced insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping, cybercrime, armed robbery, armed banditry, and other organized criminal activities in recent years. These threats have weakened political stability, endangered public safety, and slowed economic growth. To confront these challenges, intelligence agencies, especially the Nigerian Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), now perform strategic duties in surveillance, intelligence gathering, military coordination, and defence operations. This study examines how the Defence Intelligence Agency contributes to national security management in Nigeria. A qualitative research method was adopted for the study, while data were obtained mainly from textbooks, journal articles, official reports, and government publications. Findings from the study show that the agency has contributed significantly to strategic defence planning, military intelligence, and counterterrorism operations. However, inadequate funding, outdated technological infrastructure, corruption, political interference, and weak inter-agency cooperation continue to reduce its operational efficiency. The study concludes that Nigeria’s national security system can be strengthened through effective intelligence coordination, institutional reforms, and improved technological capacity. It further recommends greater investment in intelligence infrastructure, continuous training of personnel, and stronger cooperation among security agencies.
