Abstract :

The proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) has emerged as one of the most pressing security challenges confronting many local communities in Nigeria. This paper examines the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and its implications for internal security in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State between 2015 and 2024. The study investigates the factors responsible for the spread of these weapons, their impact on community safety, and the effectiveness of government and community responses. Using both primary and secondary data, the research adopts a descriptive and analytical approach to explore how political instability, porous borders, youth unemployment, and weak law enforcement have contributed to the circulation of illicit arms in the area. Findings reveal that the easy accessibility of SALW has intensified communal clashes, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, thereby undermining peace, social cohesion, and local development. The study concludes that curbing SALW proliferation requires a multidimensional approach that combines effective border management, public awareness, youth empowerment, and strong institutional collaboration. It recommends that government, security agencies, and community stakeholders strengthen arms control measures and promote peacebuilding initiatives to restore sustainable security in Omala LGA.
