Abstract :

Cattle rustling and banditry have become serious national security issues in Nigeria. This paper attempts to analyse the trend and explore how Nigerian government and particularly the Nigeria Police Force responded to the problem. The paper utilised secondary data generated from documented and electronic sources. The paper argues that Formal and Informal policing as well as “hard” and “soft” strategies were employed to tackle the menace with some remarkable successes; however, both approaches proved to be ineffective. The paper recommends addressing social inequality, application of modern technology, constructive engagements with the communities as well as boosting the morale of the security personnel as possible solution to the problem.
