Abstract :

This study examines the strategic impact of Nigeria's National Space Policy on strengthening national defence and security. It explored how the country's space policy, as a crucial component of national power, has contributed to addressing multidimensional security threats in Nigeria. The study is guided by the theory of functionalism, which views the space sector as an integral part of Nigeria's security infrastructure. Through a comprehensive review of secondary sources of data, including academic articles, policy documents, government reports, and news publications, the study analyses the impact of Nigeria's space policy on national security, particularly in counterterrorism, intelligence gathering, and military operations. The findings reveal that Nigeria's space initiatives, including the deployment of satellites for surveillance and communication, have significantly bolstered the country's defence capabilities. Notable successes include the use of satellite imagery in combating the Boko Haram insurgency and supporting peacekeeping missions in Mali. However, the study also identifies limitations, such as the reliance on foreign countries for satellite launches and insufficient training of indigenous manpower in utilizing satellite and space data for security purposes. The launch of DELSAT-1 in 2022, Nigeria's first military satellite, represents a significant step toward overcoming these challenges and enhancing the country's defence posture. The study recommends that Nigeria sustains its investment in space technology, as it is vital for addressing emerging security threats and promoting national stability.
