Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons: a Threat to National Security: a Case Study of Kaduna State: 2015-2023.

Abstract :
This study focuses on proliferation of small arms and light weapons; a threat to national security. Nigeria and Kaduna State as the case study precisely, among other states, has been facing a lot of security challenges, ranging from banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, farmers/herders clashes, and etcetera. To that, the problem kept increasing and therefore affects national security architecture of both Kaduna state and Nigeria at large. A topic which has often been neglected due to the fact that it deals with what is term as sensitive information, gain a lot of effort by the researcher, and was able to deal with big issues affecting national, regional and international security. The researcher also offered a theoretical context and examined some relevant literature that is consistent with small arms proliferation and national security. In pursuit of the objectives, through the methodology, as mentioned in the study, the researcher distributed and administered questionnaires to members of the Kaduna State’s two local government areas From the examination and interpretation of the data, the researcher found that many factors contribute to the proliferation of small arms in Kaduna state, such as the interplay of politics, porous borders, lack of proper controlled of manufacturing and production of SALW, all play a part in contributing to the proliferation of small arms and other factors thereby enhancing criminal activities. The researcher made some recommendations on how to combat the spread of small arms and enhance national security in Kaduna state, Nigeria, Africa and the World at large.
